What is DEI and why is every HR team talking about it? Diversity, equality and inclusion are not just a trend, but key elements of modern corporate culture. In this article you will learn what the acronym DEI stands for and how to incorporate a DEI policy into your recruitment strategy.

What does DEI mean?

DEI stands for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion. These three values help build an environment where everyone has an equal chance to succeed and be respected regardless of their background, age, gender or other differences.

DEI has a key place in HR. It influences not only the company culture, but also the way of recruitment, decision-making in the selection of candidates or communication towards existing employees. Implementing DEI principles into HR processes contributes to better team performance, lower turnover and higher job satisfaction.

Diversity in the workplace

Diversity means diversity. In the work environment, diversity means that different groups of people should be represented in the company. That is, women and men, young and old, locals and foreigners, healthy individuals and people with disabilities, etc. It is about ensuring that no one faces discrimination in the workplace.

Part of the reason why diversity has become such an important issue is that in recent years there has been a marked increase in globalisation and demographic change. The world is more interconnected and labour mobility is increasing. Mutual respect and cooperation across groups is becoming a necessity.

Equity: Equal conditions and fair treatment

Every employee should have the same opportunities and rights in the workplace. Equality in the working environment does not mean sameness, but ensuring equal opportunities for all. In this context, differences in remuneration for the same positions, differences in working conditions or access to benefits and development are often discussed.

In the Czech Republic, the following legal norms ensure equal treatment:

  • Act No. 198/2009 Coll., on Equal Treatment and Legal Means of Protection against Discrimination (Anti-Discrimination Act)
  • Labour Code (Act No. 262/2006 Coll.), which regulates equal treatment in the establishment and termination of employment, remuneration and working conditions
  • The Charter of Fundamental Rights and Freedoms, enshrined in the constitutional order of the Czech Republic

Ensuring equal treatment is not only a legal obligation but also an important tool for creating a fair and motivating working environment. Equality promotes employee engagement, performance and loyalty.

Inclusion: A culture where everyone can be themselves

Inclusion means the integration of an individual into a particular social group or unit. An inclusive work environment means that an employee does not have to hide any part of his or her identity. The goal of inclusion is for every employee to feel accepted at work for who they are.

An inclusive environment contributes to improved mental well-being and reduces the stress that employees from minority groups may experience. An open culture, respect and communication form the basis. Companies that promote inclusion create healthier and more stable teams. Promoting psychological safety is a cornerstone of DEI.

How to implement DEI principles in recruitment

Incorporating DEI principles (diversity, equality, inclusion) into the recruitment process is the first step towards creating a fair and inclusive work environment. The goal is to ensure that every candidate has an equal chance to succeed regardless of their background, gender, age or other personal characteristics.

A well-constructed recruitment process is the foundation of the entire company culture, so it is important that it is transparent, fair and free of bias. This approach not only promotes equal opportunities for all candidates, but also gives organisations a competitive advantage in the form of a broader talent pool and a more innovative team.

Creating inclusive job adverts

Use consistent, neutral and clear language that appeals to different groups of candidates and does not stereotype the ideal candidate.

Training for recruitment teams

Ensure that recruitment team members understand the principles of diversity, equality and inclusion and can apply them in communications and the selection process. It is important that they are aware of their own biases that may influence decision making.

Standardisation of the recruitment process

Use uniform criteria for assessing candidates, structured interviews and the same questions for all. This will help eliminate bias and ensure a fair selection process.

Monitoring and evaluation

Regularly monitor and evaluate recruitment processes from a DEI perspective, identify areas for improvement and implement necessary changes.

Blind recruitment

Remove from CVs any personal and identifying information that could affect the impartiality of the assessment. Focus only on the skills, competencies and professional experience of the candidates.

How to monitor DEI in practice

For a DEI strategy to deliver results, it must be regularly evaluated. Focus on ongoing, anonymous surveys of employees to uncover their perceptions of diversity and inclusion in the workplace. They will help you understand what is working, what needs to be improved and how to set further goals.

The data collected allows you to track changes over time, compare teams or departments and measure the impact of specific actions. This allows you to manage DEI activities in a systematic, targeted and efficient way.
